Are we doing enough?
Sustainable homeware. Is it spoken about enough? Are we doing enough to change the industry? The clothing industry is now being looked at closely and encouraged to be more conscious with the materials they’re using and reducing their waste, but what about the homeware industry?
When you hear sustainable homeware, you might think about household items that are designed and produced in an environmentally friendly manner, with a focus on reducing waste and minimizing harm to the planet. Examples you think of might include reusable water bottles, cloth napkins, bamboo kitchen utensils, and LED light bulbs. The goal within the ‘sustainable’ homeware industry is to create products that can be used for a long time, can be easily repaired or recycled, and have a lower impact on the environment than traditional, disposable homeware items.
But Is this enough?
When you research how to shop more sustainably for homeware these are the tips that are recommended to you:
- Choose reusable products: Look for items that can be used repeatedly, such as cloth napkins instead of paper ones, or a stainless-steel water bottle instead of disposable plastic.
- Buy products made from sustainable materials: Consider items made from renewable materials like bamboo, cork, or recycled plastic.
- Support companies with sustainable practices: Research the manufacturing processes of companies you’re considering purchasing from and look for those who use environmentally friendly methods and materials.
- Invest in quality: Choose durable items that will last a long time, rather than cheap, disposable items that will have to be replaced frequently.
- Avoid single-use items: Try to avoid single-use products such as disposable razors or paper plates, and opt for reusable or biodegradable alternatives.
- Shop second-hand: Buying second-hand items not only saves them from ending up in a landfill but also saves resources that would have been used to create new items.
- Repair and repurpose items: When items break, try repairing them instead of replacing them. You can also repurpose items for different uses, giving them a new lease on life.
All of the above sounds good on paper, yet just like the clothing industry, more and more homeware products both used and new are ending up in landfill and this isn’t reducing despite consumers being advised to shop more sustainably. The homeware industry is also responsible for a lot of fabric waste as well as fake (plastic) plants.
Making your house or space feel like home is a magical thing, especially for first time buyers and it shouldn’t be anything less than special.
